Welcome

Dear BCLAS members, dear colleagues,

After the organisation of the FELASA congress in June 2016, which was a great success for BCLAS and our Dutch sister associations BV and NVP, and our workshop day for the Ethics Committees (EC) and Animal Welfare Bodies (AWB) in Ghent in May 2017, it is high time to take up our tradition: the annual symposium.

We therefore have the pleasure to invite you to our Symposium 2018 which will take place on 26 and 27 April at the Palais des Congrès in Liège (www.palaisdescongresliege.be).

The event will take place in the spring instead of the autumn and the formula that became popular during previous symposia will be repeated: an afternoon of workshops concluded with a cultural and cosy evening event, followed by the symposium day.

To start the event, all our members are invited to partake in the BCLAS General Assembly which will precede the workshops of April 26th. This will give you the opportunity to meeting the members of the Board and learning more about the activities of our association. A sandwich lunch will be provided (prior online registration is obligatory).

The workshop program will be composed of a number of commercial workshops and two BCLAS workshops. The working language will be English and no simultaneous translation will be provided, but, if they prefer, participants can express themselves in Dutch or French.

  • In continuation of our successful workshop day for the members of the Ethics Committees on animal experimentation (EC) of May 31st 2017 at Ghent University, the Core Team of the Belgian Platform for ECs will organize a full afternoon workshop with the central theme cost-benefit analysis during project evaluations.
  • The second BCLAS workshop will give an Overview of new developments and techniques for working with lab mice.
In this workshop, an overview will be provided of practices and new developments and insights to optimize and refine hands-on procedures with mice. Hereto, techniques routinely required in the lab will be discussed which may include methods for handling, identification, (blood) sampling, dosing and practices for euthanasia and anaesthesia/analgesia. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences with pros/cons for the work practices and different approaches discussed. Goal is to help participants with the identification of opportunities to change their way of working or introduce new more refined practices in their work environment. As such the session could be useful for people actively involved in carrying out experimental work with mice but also for AWB members actively monitoring for and providing advice on refining opportunities. At the end of the session a short update will be provided on the status and progress of the BCLAS initiative to create an AWB platform for Belgium which was one of the main topics of the BCLAS workshop in Ghent on 31-May-2017.

For those who wish to continue, the day will be finalised by a guided visit to the recently renovated museum ‘La Boverie’, a short stop to admire the Calatrava train station and finally a typical Liège dinner in the heart of the completely renovated Guillemins district.

The theme of the symposium on April 27th concerns us all:

Culture of care in practice”

Speakers will come from various horizons and countries (France, the Netherlands, Belgium) and will illustrate how to apply this culture of care in our daily practice.

The working languages of the symposium are French and Dutch. As in previous years, simultaneous translation will be provided for this symposium day (27 April only).

In between the scientific sessions and breaks, you will have the opportunity to visit the commercial exhibition and talk to the sponsors and exhibitors in a pleasant environment.

Finally, we would like to invite you to present your scientific results and techniques at the poster session.

Please click on the links to find the complete program and all practical information on abstract submission and registration for these two days. Registration is now open. A reduced rate is offered for registrations until March 15th 2018, so take advantage of this opportunity!

Looking forward to welcoming you in Liège next spring.

Warm regards.
